A former leader of Volkswagen France takes the helm of Citroën to revitalize the brand
Here’s some news that might excite fans of the automotive industry! When we talk about vitality in the sector, it’s impossible not to mention the name Citroën, a brand that has more life than a cat with nine lives. However, the reality is much more tumultuous, with plummeting sales and a reputation that, I must admit, resembles more that of a submarine than a racing car. Today, however, a glimmer of hope appears on the horizon: the arrival of Xavier Chardon, former head of Volkswagen France, at the helm of Citroën. We can say that the brand has finally decided to change drivers!
Xavier Chardon: a return to roots for Citroën
The good Xavier, who will take up his position on June 2, has a CV as solid as the old models of the brand with the famous chevrons. Indeed, his experience at Volkswagen could prove more than advantageous, especially when we know that Volkswagen knows how to capitalize on success, even in a context of #automobile as bleak as the one we’ve seen lately. Rumors whisper that he will perform miracles and that, like a page emerged from oblivion, he will be able to inject a new strategy into Citroën, much like a chef who would bring new life to an old recipe!
An industrialization to revitalize
Let’s remember that 2024 was not a great year for the brand. Nonetheless, let’s commend their effort to turn things around after a year marked by immobilizations, complaints about defective airbags, and plummeting sales. Citroën recently had to immobilize 236,000 cars due to a Takata airbag issue, which could make a mummy blush with shame. Who said the automotive world was perfect?
The silver lining (if it exists!) is that with a slight market share recovery for the brand, this offers a glimpse of potential rebirth. Like a phoenix rising from its ashes, but with a brand new C3 Aircross SUV. Ah, the sweet irony of fate.
Citroën: Innovation as a creed
At the dawn of an era where all manufacturers are vying for the crown of electric cars, Citroën also wants to mark its territory with attentive innovation, notably focused on accessibility. It’s no secret: these days, instead of watching cars go by, it would be better to design them before they end up as old piles of scrap. If Citroën manages to enchant, they will need to make up for lost time and digitalize like never before, thus becoming a true reference in the tumultuous history of the automotive industry.
The challenges ahead
At a time when Stellantis trembles under the weight of challenges, we can only pray that Chardon will be our savior. The brand has seen revenue drops that would make an accountant pale. With a battle brewing against ever-sharper opponents, the new leader faces a true multi-level chess game. Customer feedback on the C3 and its counterparts is just the beginning, but it could lead to a revival if the good Xavier dares to implement his ideas.
At heart, Citroën has always had that little touch of madness, that creative flair that distinguishes them. Let’s hope Chardon can instill a fresh breeze, at the turn of a dark road, and shine the chevron logo once more. The road ahead remains winding, but hang tight, for every journey begins with a first step, even if that step is taken at a gas station with a poorly designed old maintenance manual.
