Stefan Mecha takes the reins of Volkswagen commercial vehicles

So here we are, a new page is turning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and not just any page! The good old Carsten Intra, known for having played the conductor in Hanover, is leaving to take his retirement. Instead of enjoying the sun and barbecues, he is handing over the reins to a certain Stefan Mecha, a name that could just as easily belong to a superhero as to a director of the most famous of German car brands.

A change of direction for Volkswagen

Starting July 1, 2025, Stefan Mecha will take command of Volkswagen's commercial vehicles, a sector that, let’s put it this way, has not always had an easy life. Since the revelation of the infamous diesel scandal, the brand's image has taken a serious hit. But fortunately, Mecha comes with a resume as long as the journey of a delivery truck in the Paris region on a Tuesday morning. Besides his experiences, he has navigated rough waters in Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and China. So there’s not much that can surprise him.

A president committed to sustainable development

Everyone has hurried to sing the praises of Mecha, claiming that he is the man for the job to propel the brand towards innovation and sustainable mobility. Let’s hope he doesn’t promise to turn every utility vehicle into a modern-day Boli, because the last thing the company needs is another trend without substance. Nevertheless, the foundation for sustainable performance could well be on the right track if he himself manages to juggle the challenges, rather than just staying in place.

Let’s not forget that, under Carsten Intra’s leadership, iconic models such as the ID. Buzz and the Transporter were born. In an extremely competitive automotive world, it is essential for Mecha not only to rebuild this reputation but to inscribe it in the modern era. In other words: he needs to steer the ship, not just paint the hull.

The challenges of a constantly evolving world

The reality is that we live in a world where sustainable transport is more than just a trend; it is a necessity. For Volkswagen, this smooth transition to eco-friendly vehicles is not just a challenge, it’s a matter of survival. If Mecha wants to start crafting a legend among “commercial vehicles,” he has to tackle logistics with the determination of a rugby player in a World Cup final.

In short, it’s not just about hitting the “start” button. The new strongman of commercial vehicles will have to manage high expectations, constant innovations, and, of course, the open wounds that VW has itself caused. Let’s hope this appointment is the boost the industry needs to rethink its approach and, above all, to avoid ending up under the spotlight for the wrong reasons again.

It might be time to leave behind the old mindsets, even those that have followed the brand for decades. With Mecha, the road to the future could indeed be paved with good intentions. But a good intention without action is a bit like a car without an engine: just a nice shell. All we can do is hope there won’t be another obstacle on this bumpy road.

I’m that guy they call when everyone else has already said, “It can’t be done.”Obsessed with engines, the smell of grease, and coffee that's way too strong, I spend my days grumbling about modern times while tinkering with stuff that goes faster than it probably should.I’ve got an opinion on everything — especially when nobody asks — and I never do things halfway: it’s either brilliant or a complete disaster. But hey, at least it’s never boring.I believe progress is great… as long as it doesn’t replace elbow grease, common sense, and a good old 12mm wrench. My style? Straightforward, raw, sometimes absurd, often funny (well, I think I’m funny). If you’re looking for someone discreet, politically correct, and ready to tell you what you want to hear… you’ve clearly knocked on the wrong workbench. But if what you want is real ideas, raw passion, and straight talk that smells like gasoline — welcome aboard.
