MEB, the secret electric platform: at the heart of the Volkswagen controversy
In the land of electric cars, it is somewhat tragic to see that one quarter of the vehicles sold in Europe was born from a scandal. Long before we talked about MEB, the dramatic story of Volkswagen took a swift turn with the dieselgate, a chapter that some would have preferred to forget and others, like the brand itself, had no choice but to experience a true return to its roots — by electrifying their destiny.
Ten years ago, an email a few pages long shook the foundations of the German giant. This infamous notice of violation from the EPA, as if it were a love letter coming from the depths of a black hole, ignited the automotive industry, leaving Martin Winterkorn praying that the sky wouldn’t fall on his head.
And, like some kind of bad game of dominoes, the world witnessed the emergence of the MEB platform, or Modular E-Drive Kit for purists who enjoy entangling themselves in jargon. This is not just a simple project, but a real electric toolbox, akin to a handyman's chest in a garage — filled with chassis, motors, wiring, and the promise of a wonderful future. One might almost want to toast to its health, were it not for the bitter reality that accompanies it.
Daring choices in a time of change
Those who have survived the corridors of the Wolfsburg offices know that Volkswagen’s audacity tried to redefine its enormous ship adrift. Diess, that gentleman chief engineer, has somehow taken it upon himself to redefine the company’s DNA by investing in electric technology, far from the old thermal customs. Competitors were already on the road, but VW, with a good old dose of entrepreneurial madness, committed to creating an architecture that was supposedly going to make giants like Mercedes and BMW blush.
Just that! While the latter continued to yo-yo with thermal drives, Volkswagen decided to opt for a skateboard-type chassis. Yes, a real skateboard! The idea being to optimize the space inside for interiors worthy of the hottest pub nights. However, of course, one had to think about the powertrain, and that is where the choice of rear electric motor was made. Why in the rear? Maybe to make a little more noise at traffic lights? We know that style matters even in the setup of the electric motor!
Between innovations and revolutions
When MEB arrived on the market, the goal set was to reach the bar of one million electric vehicles produced. But, oh, misfortune, it was not VW but Tesla that won the prize. And today? Some strut around with over 2.5 million MEB vehicles on the roads. But there you have it, these figures conceal darker realities. For customers, the weight of the vehicles weighs heavily on paper. An ID.3 flirts with 1,815 kg, while neighbors like the Renault Megane E-Tech play the lightness card. Who said that sustainable mobility did not require having a good diet?
And it doesn’t stop there: problems of electronic architecture and software sit alongside production. Chaotic beginnings, with customer returns bursting like bubbles on Instagram, do not lead the manufacturer to the honored place in the race for electric cars. This and the dubious ergonomics of the user interface: how to make an air conditioning command without backlighting, really? The magic of a faulty computer in a futuristic vehicle!
The turbulence of the industry facing electric technology
Navigating through the maze of the modern automotive industry, VW has also had to take into account the emerging storms in the Chinese market, where the manufacturer finds itself fighting for survival. A such a large actor on the decline against small local brands rising like mushrooms. Indeed, one should not underestimate the determination of new companies, armed with technological innovations, batteries, and audacity.
And while the group hoped to sell millions of electric vehicles, the current reality seems to remind us that even a quarter of the European market is still a plateau that does not guarantee a bright future. Who would have thought that one day we would talk about Volkswagen as an exceptional brand, but in the context of a scandal closely followed by the entire automotive chessboard? All this to say that if we want to move forward, a good steering wheel maneuver will be required.
But in this era of change, innovation remains the only way forward. The models derived from the MEB continue to emerge, and perhaps one day the memory of dieselgate will be but a shadow on the board, a lesson learned the hard way. But in the meantime, on the brink of a sustainable revolution, eyes will remain fixed on the MEB and its frantic ambitions, even if skepticism remains and arms are crossed.
