Volkswagen surpasses Tesla in Europe in the electric car sales sector
Volkswagen has achieved something that was thought to be almost impossible: surpassing Tesla in Europe in electric car sales. The German brand, often considered a bit clumsy giant, successfully kicked the butt of the uncontested king of electric vehicles, thus shaking up a European automotive market in full transformation. The figures for the first quarter of 2025 speak for themselves, showing phenomenal growth at Volkswagen and a serious slump for Tesla. Here is the clash of titans lighting up sustainable mobility, between technological innovation and commercial warfare.
Volkswagen dethrones Tesla in the European electric vehicle market
Ah, Europe and its whims! While everyone expected Tesla to continue its unchallenged hegemony, here comes Volkswagen storming in, armed to the teeth and ready to win the battle in the electric automotive sector. While Tesla plummets, collapsing with a 38% drop in sales this first quarter, Volkswagen shows an audacious +157% with over 65,679 registrations. Not bad for a manufacturer that some consider a dinosaur, right?
Elon Musk must be biting his nails watching BMW make a strong comeback, with a 21% jump and 46,557 sales, while Audi is not just standing still, enjoying a 51% increase with 34,739 registrations. Even Renault is holding its own with an 89% increase driven by the strength of its electric Renault 5.
Slight cooling for Tesla, but the Model Y remains king
Even though Tesla shows signs of weakness, we cannot take away its crown as the best-selling model, namely the Model Y. The electrified behemoth stands tall with 29,770 registrations on the counter, followed closely by the Model 3 with 23,044. But be careful, the drop is severe: nearly 49% decline for the Model Y, a clear sign that the brand is in full transition, particularly due to the awaited vehicle update.
In this context, Volkswagen launches its ID.4 and ID.7 which rise respectively by 115% and total sales of 21,025 and 18,770 units – not bad for outsiders playing leading roles.
The competition intensifies, European manufacturers hold their own
Forget the “just good” in the battle for sustainable mobility. Kia impresses with a fit EV3 SUV, securing fifth place in the rankings with 18,484 registrations, far ahead of the Renault Scénic and its 9,793 sales. Even Skoda and BMW are holding their own with +58% and +34% growth respectively. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Peugeot are advancing slowly, and we are not even talking about MG, Nissan, or Fiat, who are taking a serious hit.
This surge in electric vehicle sales is not just a whim: it is a sign that the automotive market in Europe is entering a completely new era, marked by real competition and a race for technological innovation.
A strategic turning point for Volkswagen, a warning for Tesla
Volkswagen did not simply take advantage of a temporary weakness at Tesla. No, the German brand has skillfully responded to the demands of a reinventing automotive sector. With a clear strategy, explosive sales in the first quarter, and models tailored for the European market, Volkswagen finally illustrates what sustainable mobility can genuinely offer.
Conversely, Tesla will need to seriously reflect on this setback and learn to read the European situation, rather than imagining that technology always equates to automatic domination.
