There are weekends that promise grandeur and end up as a parade of cars spewing more smoke than a factory on technical unemployment. However, in the Tarn, in Guitalens-l'Albarède, this 6th Easter meeting is a vibrant ode to nostalgia, gathering enthusiasts of classic cars who have decided to never let go of their Combi or their legendary Beetle. A gathering where the obsessive passion for Volkswagen refuses to give in to the madness of GPS and other electronic aids.

An unmissable event for fans of vintage Volkswagen vehicles in the Tarn

On the weekend of April 19 and 20, the small commune of Guitalens-l'Albarède, between Castres and Lavaur, witnessed a colorful and murmuring procession of over 150 classic cars from Germany. From simple vintage models to almost sacred pieces, these Volkswagen vehicles offered a spectacle as refreshing as a retro advertisement played on repeat. The "Easter meeting" attracts the most stubborn collectors from France each year, who come together to share their love of mechanics defying the decades.

Passionates: when love rhymes with mechanics and family saga-worthy anecdotes

Clearly, this gathering is not for lovers of modern sanitized and fully assisted cars. The outdated charm, that's the very essence of these Beetles and Combis pimped with sweat and passion. Sébastien, who came from Cannes, proudly shows off his 1964 Karmann Ghia, "that vibrant red with a black roof" which was the most expensive coupe of its time. He exclaims: "A German designed by an Italian, an improbable but sublime marriage." Next to him, Jean-Christophe is lovingly taking care of a light blue Beetle, a gift for his 34th birthday, practicing what he calls "true driving", without electronic assistance to calm the nerves. "It's rustic, but what a pleasure!" he sighs.

Generations and values the Volkswagen way: comfort, freedom, and solidarity

Not far from there, Dani and Jean, two retirees from Var, proudly defend their Transporter T3 affectionately nicknamed "vanilla rocket" – happiness, freedom, relaxation, it's all there. Jean, a former dealer, and his partner have been collecting Volkswagens for ages, but this one remains their family jewel, capable of covering kilometers at sixty while offering comfort that no modern car could equal according to him, even with its gargantuan consumption of 14 l/100. A very gentle power steering has been added to tame the beast. Among these enthusiasts, mutual aid is second nature: "As soon as a vehicle acts up, everyone rushes over," Dani recounts with a knowing smile.

A weekend with the scent of gasoline and oil where modernity fades away

These gatherings are also an act of resistance against the hyper-connected society, just as nostalgics wave their cigarette in the wind – vintage, yes, but unfiltered. The passion for these classic cars also symbolizes a rejection of the latest generation electric cars that Volkswagen is trying, albeit clumsily, to make appealing through incantatory numbers and touch screens disguised as dashboards (for more details on Volkswagen's electric return). Here, however, we talk about true bolides, noisy, charming, and surprisingly friendly.

I’m that guy they call when everyone else has already said, “It can’t be done.”Obsessed with engines, the smell of grease, and coffee that's way too strong, I spend my days grumbling about modern times while tinkering with stuff that goes faster than it probably should.I’ve got an opinion on everything — especially when nobody asks — and I never do things halfway: it’s either brilliant or a complete disaster. But hey, at least it’s never boring.I believe progress is great… as long as it doesn’t replace elbow grease, common sense, and a good old 12mm wrench. My style? Straightforward, raw, sometimes absurd, often funny (well, I think I’m funny). If you’re looking for someone discreet, politically correct, and ready to tell you what you want to hear… you’ve clearly knocked on the wrong workbench. But if what you want is real ideas, raw passion, and straight talk that smells like gasoline — welcome aboard.
