Consumption Challenge in Andalusia: my test of the all-new Audi A5 hybrid
France woke up one frosty morning, and all those with a bit of common sense wondered why continue to suffer in an unbearable chill when Andalusia, with its shining sun, was waiting with open arms. Off to the south, and what better excuse than to test the brand new Audi A5 hybrid? It’s like a dream come true: a sedan that is both attractive and, oh miracle, clean. The challenge? Record the lowest possible consumption on a route of 306 km. Simple, right? We can hardly believe it, but well, let’s go!
At nine o'clock, the mercury reads a pleasant 24°C, just enough to make nerves tingle while waiting for the A5 to wake from its slumber. It’s finally time to leave the Finca La Bobadilla hotel, perched like a treasure in the heart of the Andalusian countryside. Departure, of course, in Efficiency mode, because one does not take the consumption challenge lightly. This black sedan, S line model, begins to glide silently on the road, showing an emission-free range of 92 km… from the start. Reassuring, isn’t it?
Unfortunately, the first turn shakes the experience. Admittedly, tackling its rigid lowered chassis and 19-inch wheels never bodes well for sacred comfort. Speed bumps rise like little mountains to cross. Indeed, nothing unbearable, but you can’t replace good suspension with impeccable road holding. Speaking of road holding, the Audi A5 excels in this, allowing for the passage of these Andalusian kilometers without much fatigue.
It must be said that the landscapes are captivating. From ochre deserts to cultivated fields, the journey is truly a feast for the eyes. And, icing on the cake, the A5 features a hybrid system that intelligently manages electric driving phases based on the topography. A little boost for sustainable mobility, right? Audi is indeed ahead of its time with its hybrid performances!
As we traverse the hills, the question arises: how do these 20.7 kWh batteries regenerate? Magnificently! Audi claims to recover up to 88 kW of regeneration. Hats off! Additionally, eco-driving tips accompany every turn and roundabout, suggesting to ease off the throttle here and there, which adds a delightful irony, right in the heart of Andalusia.
Paradoxically, entering the charming village of Overo, weaving through its narrow streets proves to be quite a challenge. How can a 4.83-meter vehicle maneuver with dignity? You start to understand why Andalusians often drive small cars. With its 143 hp electric motor capable of tackling hills without waking the thermal engine, one cannot help but admire the white facades.
But let’s talk a bit about the interior. Modernity is the key word with its curved screens of 11.9 and 14.5 inches. However, the graphics seem a bit cold, perhaps like all the onboard technology, a touch complex. But would we want fewer options in our car? That is the question. Indeed, the quality of finish seems to have taken a hit: the padding is light, and the rigid materials no longer care for delicacy.
For €81,286, it isn’t too much to hope for a bit more in this regard. Although the presence of serious assemblies and beautiful Alcantara trims is pleasing, the rear central passenger will have to tolerate a bulky transmission tunnel. The trunk also appears a bit modest with its 331 liters... But it’s an eco-friendly car, isn’t it? What more could you ask for!
And finally, the long-awaited moment: the second half of the journey on charming winding roads. The Audi A5 hybrid proves to be agile, devouring the kilometers like a hungry tiger. The all-wheel drive Quattro engages, and the chassis balance is scrutinized like an enchanting ballet. However, despite the challenge of conserving energy, the accelerations feel less dynamic.
And there you have it, after 306 km on the road, the final consumption stands at 3.1 l/100 km. Impressive, indeed. But let’s not forget that this score is the result of a perfect road, a full battery at the start, and a meticulously careful driving style. Who has the time to calculate every turn, every red light, every acceleration to save precious fuel? It quickly becomes a quest requiring as much patience as passion.
Ultimately, the Audi A5 hybrid has proven that it can be both elegant and eco-responsible. While some aspects of the quality may disappoint, this model will undoubtedly shine in corporate fleets. There’s no denying it, technology moves forward, but the joys of the road are still very much present.
For those wishing to broaden their horizons regarding this hybrid car, it’s time to explore its added value against competitors like models from the competition starting in 2025.
