A new Sportback version of the Audi A5 in preparation?
The world of cars is sometimes as confusing as a labyrinth with no exit, and Audi seems to revel in it. Just when you're already lost in the jungle of models, the information that lingers like the sound of a tired engine would be that a new Sportback version of the Audi A5 is in preparation. Yes, yet another one! Have you ever tried to count the number of variants of a car? It's an exercise that could very well be classified among circus talents.
Audi and its muddle of designations
At the root of the confusion is this presentation during the Shanghai Auto Show. What kind of joke is this? An Audi A5 Sportback that we already have?
To make it clear, the five-door version already exists, and it is a sedan with a practical hatch that would make even preferred Utility jealous. But they decided to throw us a "Sportback" version as if it were a revolution! Bringing what exactly? A bit of sportiness to fool the fools in the shows?
Practical or superfluous?
Judging by the rumors, Audi would allow itself to offer yet another additional variant: the A5L Sportback. And yes, this pretty name that seems to come from a random generator informs us that this version is intended for the Chinese market and will not dare to tickle the streets of Europe.
Imagine for a moment a European customer encountering an A5 Sportback that turns out to be a licensed product from the other end of the world. It was surely a joke from an engineer in search of twisted inspiration.
A question of design and performance
In the end, what a beautiful joke unless one sticks to a dazzling design and an engine that recalls the performance of a worn-out V8. Audi cannot seriously make us believe that all this is due to the modernization of technology. After all, it all ends up looking like a vast marketing campaign where the creative genius seems to have vaporized.
And what about the Audi A6L e-Tron? Of course, there’s also another variant, but again, logistics got lost somewhere. These longer models, although totally useless, yet boldly luxurious, could they at some point have classical meanings? Perhaps the “L” in A6L signifies more “Lopo” than reinforced space.
An alarming trend
All this raises an essential question: what has become of the sense of design and innovation within the automotive industry? If one is forced to ask the question, it’s because we know well that some models seem to be created just to add option sets. In the meantime, Audi might as well propose a cheaper A5L Sportback e-Tron.
It is always entertaining to see how these manufacturers compete to dominate a saturated market with versions that overlap in a way that even an antique dealer couldn’t have imagined. Let’s keep an eye open as this new A5, once again, mixes with the others in the greatest confusion. It goes without saying that the automotive world is a circus where clowns multiply... And we, poor spectator assistants, can only laugh about it.
